If you are a foodie there’s no better place to be than Mumbai. The eating out scene is literally exploding with newer and better options. Even the internationally acclaimed Taste Festival deemed it logical to present their first edition of the Taste Festival in India in Mumbai! The Taste Of Mumbai was recently held at Marine Drive and saw Mumbai’s most prestigious restaurants and celebrated chefs serve sample-sized signature dishes to visitors.
American Express was the presenting sponsor for Taste of Mumbai, which brought together celebrated chefs like Abhijit Saha from Caperberry, Italian restaurant Diva’s Ritu Dalmia, Manu Chandra of Olive Bar & Kitchen and Vicky Ratnani to share their culinary art and present signature dishes. Alain Fabrègues from Australia, Jehangir Mehta from New York, Vivek Singh from London and Margot Janse from South Africa were some of the international guest chefs for the event.
Arola from JW Marriott, Caperberry from Bangalore, China House from Grand Hyatt, Ellipsis, Fire from The Park Hotel in Delhi, Impresario Handmade Restaurants, Kofuku, Koh from InterContinental, Olive Bar & Kitchen and Prego, The Westin were some of the participating restaurants. The two international ‘guest’ restaurants were Cinnamon Kitchen, London and Graffiti, New York.
The festival kick started on an exciting note with a live cooking session with Nadia Lim, MasterChef New Zealand and Cyrus Broacha at Fisher & Paykel Taste Theater. Nadia cooked some her scrumptious signature dishes for the audience including Thai Salmon Cakes, Pineapple & Lime Sugar, Lamb Cutlets with thyme and beetroot.
The main attraction at the event was the Fisher & Paykel Taste Theatre, where the culinary greats took to the stage and shared their secrets, showed off their skills and polished ours with a plethora of pan rattling demonstrations.
Noted Indian chef, television chef, cookbook author and restauranteur Ritu Dalmia, showed off her Diva ways, (she is the owner of the Italian restaurant Diva in Delhi). Apart from demonstrating cooking techniques, sharing tips & tricks, Ritu also dished up a fabulous five course meal for select editors (yes I was part of it. Lucky me!)
Nadia Lim and Chef Nachiket Sheyte cooked scrumptious sandwiches for the visitors. At a fun session for children Chef Jehangir Mehta taught them simple yet tasty open sandwiches. Food was not the only attraction. There was dance, drama and some theatricals as well. Zumba expert Swetha Jairam showed off some zumba moves while to Nadia who turned out to be a great sport.
There was a lot of drama and the chefs played along. The ‘Mystery Box Challenge’ saw MasterChef fame and Westin Executive Chef Ajay Chopra play contestant and Nadia Lim the judge. The playful act resulted in the creation of a beautiful new dish- Lamb with a dal tikki base, chilly and lemongrass.
Things took a healthy twist when Ritu Dalmia cooked with nutritionist Dr. Niti Desai to create two healthy yet delicious dishes – Prawn Salad and Glass Noodles with vegetable stir fry. Things took an interesting twist when Chef Ritu challenged Dr. Desai to create a calorie rich Chicken and mushroom in red wine dish from the movie Julie and Julia, with the movie clip to guide her through the recipe.
